Each electrolytic rectifier has one set of electrodes 2, 4, 6 &c., made of aluminium, niobium or tantalum, and another set of electrodes 1, 3, 5 &c., made of nickel, carbon or carbon impregnated plastics in an electrolyte of an aqueous solution of an alkaline hydroxide such as a carbonate or borate or potash. Oxygen and hydrogen given off by the electrolytic rectifiers can be added to that produced by the electrolyser. |
