A machine tool for profiling the wheels of railway vehicle wheel sets comprises first and second pairs of elevators 1A, 2 and 1, 2A respectively having rollers 4 for supporting the wheel set 15, two pairs of driving units 6, 7 with driving rollers 10 which engage with the wheels to rotate the wheel set during machining, and means 14 for profile machining the wheels which is mounted for movement parallel to the axis of the wheel set. In operation, rollers on the first pair of elevators engage the wheels to support the wheel set while a predetermined portion of the wheels is machined, and thereafter the first elevators are retracted and the second pair of elevators engage the machined portion of the wheels to permit the remaining portion of the wheel to be machined. One of the driving units is clamped, by fluid means in relation to a wheel of the set so as to maintain the wheel set in its aligned position during the whole machining operation. The driving units are movable by fluid means 8, 9 into driving engagement with the aligned wheel set prior to the commencement of the machining operation. |
