The invention relates to apparatus in which energy is conserved by contacting water with warm air thereby warming the water which is then contacted with cooler air entering a building so warming and humidifying that air. Alternatively the water may be contacted with cool air and then with warmer air about to enter the building so reducing its heat content and energy required for refrigeration. The invention conserves energy through cyclic direct contact of water with two or more air or gas streams at different total heat levels. Recycled air in a building may be contacted with a liquid which is then contacted with air entering the building.
