A power-assisted steering system has a steering column which is divided along its length and has components connected to one another by means of a torsional spring (3), one part (1) bearing a steering wheel (7), a double-acting working cylinder (12 to 14) whose piston rod has a toothed rod component (11) and is connected fixed in terms of rotation to the steering column component (2) facing away from the steering wheel, and a compression means source (23) which is connected via a control valve (20, 21) to the working cylinder which can be controlled by a control unit (25) as a function of the travel speed of the vehicle. In order to provide a power-assisted steering system in which even at a low speed of the vehicle the steering force to be applied by the driver is relatively small, a rotational movement meter (27, 28) which is connected to the control unit is arranged between the two parts of the steering column and the valve provided is a proportional valve (20, 21) which can be additionally actuated by the control unit (Fig. 1) as a function of the steering movement of the steering wheel. <IMAGE>
