Sewer system serving in particular for draining off sewage and storm water, between the sewer sections of which there are provided cleaning chambers, suitable downpipes connected to the sewer sections via branching pipe pieces of T-shaped construction being arranged between the cleaning chambers in order to lower mechanical cleaning equipment. Guide elements for the cleaning equipment are provided in the branching pipe pieces. The down pipes can be assembled from a plurality of detachably interconnected pipe sections, at least one of which can be exchanged for a mouthpiece for a tributary channel. The down pipes and the sewer sections, and also the branching pipe pieces and mouth pieces can be made of plastic, and are interconnected by means of couplings, known per se, having rubber seals.
