A lifting appliance, in particular a hoist for motor vehicles, has two scissor pairs arranged independently of one another and having rails resting on them, which results in a space-saving construction of the hoist in the lowered state. The two scissor pairs are synchronised via two pumps driven together, and to monitor a forced out-of-synchronism a flexibly suspended rope is provided between the two scissor pairs.
