A device for recognising documents is created in which a document present in the document plane (1) is illuminated and a receiver (15, 16, 17) directed towards the illuminatable document plane (1) supplies a signal to a signal processing device (40) in dependence on the light reemitted or scattered by the document. To detect the colour of the light emanating from the document, three receivers (15, 16, 17) are provided which are in each case supplied with the light via colour filters (31, 32, 33) of the primary colours blue, green and red. The signal processing device (40) generates a signal which is independent of the brightness of the reemitted or scattered light and unambiguously identifies the colour of a document, which signal is compared with colour signal data stored in a memory (48) so that the document can be unambiguously recognised by means of its colour. <IMAGE>
