A container 10 has a generally circular lid 17 of resilient plastics material provided with an annular skirt 16 having an inwardly extending projection 16a, an upwardly facing surface 12 on the container causing the lid to pivot when its centre is depressed, Fig. 2 (not shown), so expanding the lower part of the skirt 16 and lifting the projection 16a over a flange 13 on the container. The lid may have an upwardly extending projection (17b), Fig. 4 (not shown), on its central part and an annular projection 18 formed on its underside to act as a fulcrum. Alternatively, the projection (18a), Fig. 3 (not shown), may be formed on the container mouth. A plastics annular insert (22), Fig. 7 (not shown), providing a flange (22a) corresponding to the flange 13, may be fitted into an aperture (23) in a surface (24) of a container; or the area around an aperture in a surface of a metal container (20), Fig. 6 (not shown), may be rolled over to form a mouth (21) with a flange (21a). |
