PURPOSE:To polarize light by 90 deg. while holding reflection factors to S polarized light and P polarized light equal to each other by cementing surfaces of a 45 deg. and a right-angled prism which contain one short side, and making light incident perpendicularly to an uncemented surface of one prism which contains the short side and projecting the light from the uncemented surface of the other prism which contains the short side at right angles. CONSTITUTION:The short-side surfaces of the 45 deg. and right-angled prisms 1 and 2 which have length (a) and thickness b=a are cemented. In this constitution, when light O is incident to the surface A of the prism 1 which contains the short side at right angles, it is reflected totally twice in the prisms 1 and 2 and projected at right angles to the surface B of the prism 2 which contains the short side. In this case, the reflection factor of the prism 1 to a P wave is equal to that of the prism 2 to an S wave and the reflection factor of the prism 2 to the P wave is equal to that of the prism 1 to the S wave as shown in a figure wherein two lateral axes show the intensity of light beams of the P wave and S wave, so the reflection factors to the P wave and S wave when the prisms 1 and 2 are combined together are equal to each other. |
