An arc furnace electrode comprises an internally cooled annular electrode face member 90 containing a magnetic field coil 71 and an elongated tubular structure carrying the face member and comprising two concentricallyarranged sleeves through which cooling fluid passes, the structure being thermally shielded against heat from an arc struck between the face member and a melt and caused to rotate by the magnetic field produced by the coil. Coaxial tubes 10, 21, 31 extend from a head (15), Fig. 1A (not shown), to support a cylindrical member 37. A Cu coil 71 in a housing 72 is attached to the bottom of member 37 by an annular sleeve 67 and an annular electrode face member 90 removably mounted over and spaced from the coil to form annular passageways 96, 98. A fluid channelling member 48 and a retaining member 76 are secured together by a bolt 49 within member 37. Water flows down the annular channel 32 between tubes 21, 31 to passageways 96, 98 cooling the arcing surface and the coil 71 and returns up tube 31. A heat shield comprising ceramic members 119, 118, 117 extends over the tube 10 and member 37, the inner part of which is shielded by a ceramic plug 84 spring-loaded against member 76. The slanting sides of the face member 90 may also be thermally insulated by ceramic coatings (171), (172), Fig. 4 (not shown). The plug may be replaced by a water-cooled ceramic coated metal cap member (151), Figs. 3, 5 (not shown), electrically insulated from member (90). In another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the tube (10) is replaced by coaxial water-cooled sleeves (224), (235), the ceramic heat shield (232) is reinforced by wires (233), and the coil comprises eight turns separated by insulation (283) and disposed in P.T.F.E. resin. Each turn contains a fluid passageway (282) and fluid flows to and from the coil in hollow leads (207), (208). The electrode may be used with 3-phase A.C. or D.C.; the coil is supplied with D.C. The electrode may be used in direct, indirect and submerged arc furnaces, e.g. for melting of para- or ferromagnetic materials.
