NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula I (R1 and R2 are 1-8C alkyl). EXAMPLE:Trans, trans-4-propyl-4'-methylbicyclohexane. USE:A liquid crystal substance useful as an electrooptical display material, having improved utility, low viscosity, low-temperature characteristics, and stability. PROCESS:A compound shown by the formula II is heated in the presence of a small amount of sulfuric acid in CH3OH under reflux by heating to give a compound shown by the formula III, which is reduced with LiAlH4, etc. to give a compound shown by the formula IV. This compound is reacted with hydrobromic acid and conc. sulfuric acid to give a compound shown by the formula V, which is reacted with an alkyl lithium or dehalogenated with H2 in the presence of a Pd or Pt catalyst, to give a compound shown by the formula I . This compound has good compatibility with other liquid crystal compounds, low anisotropy of refractive index so that an angle of visual range is widened, it has further improved response properties, especially improved sharpness, and low temperature dependence of drive voltage, so that it is useful for highly divided drive. |
