PURPOSE:To enable production of a base material having a uniform outside diameter while preventing the elongation of the base material by moving a lower holder relatively with a heating furnace which welds and units the optical fiber bundle held at the top and bottom ends to one body. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber bundle 2 is mounted to a check 1 at the front end of a block 4, and the quartz bar 13 mounted to a check 15 at the front end of a block 12 is lightly placed on the bottom end of the bundle 2. When the block 4, 12 are lowered synchronously by running a motor 8, the bundle 2 fed perpendicularly into a heating furnace 3 is successively heated from the bottom end thereof and is welded to one body. The welded base material is successively delivered and solidified toward the lower part of the furnace 3. Since the fiber bundle is supported with the bar 13, the part softened by the heating is kept free from the weight of the hardened base material and therefore the softened part does not elongate. The base material having a uniform outside diameter is thus obtd. without elongation. |
