What is described is an especially efficient and cost-effective process for the series production of so-called brushing worms for bottle-treating machines or the like, in which a thread matched to the vessel cross-section is obtained from a cylinder-like round brush having plastic bristles by an appropriate shortening of specific bristles. The shortening is carried out by a controlled supply of heat in a closely restricted region, so the bristles melt at a specific separating point. The separation can be assisted by mechanical pressure. The apparatus for carrying out this process consists essentially of a conventional worm-cutting machine, to the tool carrier (6) of which is fastened a curved heating element (11) made of strip material. The heating element consists of a heat-resistant resistance alloy and is connected to a controllable current source (13). <IMAGE>
