The invention relates to a method for the addition of a grain refiner in wire or rod form to a metal melt for casting, such as an Al alloy bath. The refiner should be added rapidly and precisely in a defined quantity with simple method steps, if required with the use of a device of simple construction, and achieve a saving in terms of refiner as compared to grain refining with the aid of pigs and furthermore increase the grain refining effect. To achieve this object, the wire or rod containing the grain refiner is cut precisely to the length which corresponds to the quantity of refiner to be added and the piece of wire or rod is plunged into the standing metal melt in a casting or holding crucible with a reciprocating or helical motion.
