A method of and apparatus for embossing characters (4) in a plate (1), particularly a motor vehicle registration plate, wherein a sheet (3) of which the intended operative face differs visually from the intended operative face of the plate (1) and of which the other face of the sheet (3) is provided with an activatable adhesive is located on the intended operative face of a blank plate (2); and the adhesive is activated selectively in places on the sheet (3) other than those where the embossed characters (4) will appear in order to cause the sheet (3) to adhere to the plate (2) in those places only. The method furthermore includes the steps of embossing the characters (4) in the plate (2); cutting through the material of sheet (3) all along the outer peripheries of the embossed characters (4); removing the cut out material to expose the underlying embossed characters (4); and activating the rest of the adhesive on the sheet (3) to cause the rest of the sheet (3) to adhere to the plate (2).
