PURPOSE:To obtain an optical element which displays an image having good quality and has excellent drivability, productivity, durability and reliability by providing a liquid layer exhibiting transparency to visible light and a heating element for heating the liquid layer to the extent that the liquid layer does not boil. CONSTITUTION:A heating element 1 heats a liquid layer 2 consisting of a liquid showing transparency to visible light to the extent that the properties of the layer 2 changes and the layer 2 does not boil. Water or various org. solvents are used alone or in combination for the basic compsn. of the light transmittable liquid. The element 1 generates heat to heat the layer 2 to the extent that the transmittable liquid of said layer does not boil and the properties thereof change, thus forming a heating part 13 for the liquid layer. The illumination light 4 passing the part 13 is refracted, scattered or diffracted by a thermal refractive index grade, by which the light is refracted and changed in the optical path without advancing rectilinearly in the layer 2. Therefore such light is optically discriminated from the illumination light 4 passing the low temp. region. A piece of the very small heating part for the liquid layer is arranged as a display picture element unit at a high density, and the displaying of the image with a high resolution is made possible. |
