A process for separating methane from a gaseous mixture (1) of carbon dioxide and methane wherein the gas mixture is brought into contact with a first separator (7) having a membrane (8) more permeable to carbon dioxide than methane to allow a carbon dioxide-enriched gas (2) to permeate the membrane. The non-permeated gas (6) is passed into contact with at least one subsequent separator (9) from which a carbon dioxide-enriched permeate gas (4) is withdrawn as a recycle stream (2).
