A process for depositing metals and/or semimetals on photoconductors of metal compounds in the presence of a polar organic compound and with exposure to light at a wavelength having an energy which is greater than the band gap of the treated photoconductor, in particular under a substantially inert atmosphere, is described, an organic compound in the form of a monohydric or polyhydric alcohol and/or of a monohydric or polyhydric thioalcohol being used, the organic radical or radicals of the alcohol and of the thioalcohol exhibiting a positive induction effect and/or free radical-stabilising effect, and the alkyl group being excluded for this radical. This process has the advantage that it can be carried out simply and rapidly, and troublesome reaction products are easy to remove. It permits the production of advantageous catalytic products, but also that of printed circuit boards.
