A surface cleaning device for cleaning smooth surfaces, such as ceramic floors, consists of a spraying nozzle 10 for spraying a cleaning liquid in the form of a diverging flat jet onto the surface to be cleaned, a suction head 13 exhibiting an elongate suction opening 12, a pressure line 11 for leading the cleaning liquid to the spraying nozzle 10 situated near to the suction head 13, and a suction line which is constructed, in particular, as a hollow handle and can suck the used cleaning liquid up again from the floor. The suction head is provided at least on its front side with a sealing lip 25 which can be used as a scraping member. At the rear boundary of the suction opening there is a brush 28 which is used for cleaning severely soiled surfaces and for generally improving the cleaning effect (Figure 1). In a further embodiment, the brush can be mounted on the rear side of the suction head. In this case, the suction head is mounted so as to be swivellable on the handle and is provided with a sealing lip which completely surrounds the suction opening. <IMAGE>
