In the case of a process for controlling the operation of a compressor driven by an electric motor, the compressor on reaching an upper pressure limit of the compressed medium is connected to a reservoir downstream from the compressor initially for relief operation and then, depending on the magnitude of the instantaneous consumption of compressed medium, left in this mode until a lower pressure limit is reached or the drive is entirely switched off until the lower pressure limit is reached. In order to determine whether relief operation is maintained or whether the drive can be entirely switched off, the rate of the pressure variation in the reservoir immediately the upper pressure limit is reached and the running time of the drive motor are employed as criteria.
