In the device, means for acquiring and storing the period between penultimate and ultimate defrost are provided. Means also acquire the acquisition values of the temperature difference of the air in front of and behind the evaporator, of the air humidity of the space air and of the switch-on times and period of a compressor connected to the evaporator. Connected to the means for acquiring these acquisition values are correcting means, in which tabulated correction values are assigned to the acquisition values. In the correcting means, the stored period can be converted into a corrected period. Switch-on means, which are connected to the correcting means, are triggered by these after expiry of the corrected period as of the completion of the last defrost period.
