A wheel chair comprises a pair of main non- steerable wheels 5 and at least two steerable driving wheels 14, the driving wheels 14 and a traction motor 13 therefor forming a unit which is pivotable about a generally vertical axis relative to the main frame of the chair for steering by a steering motor 17. The traction motor drives the wheels 14 through a worm gear and a differential and the steering motor is mounted on the unit and drives, through a belt 18, a pinion which engages a worm-wheel which is rigidly fixed to the shaft 19, about which the unit is pivotable. The electric servo-steering motor 17 is controlled through a slave potentiometer sensitive to the relative angular positions of the unit and main frame and a master potentiometer sensitive to the position of a manual control 21, the potentiometers' output determining the direction and rate of steering. The output may be arranged to supply either a low or high voltage to the steering motor. To increase the sensitivity of the steering the master potentiometer winding has a smaller resistance within its central section than within its outer sections and/or the slave potentiometer has a lower resistance in its outer sections than in its central section. The battery 4 is mounted below a seat 2 and the arm-rest 6 and foot-rest 7 on each side are swingable outwards. The height of the foot-rest is adjustable by a hand heel 12. |
