The rated power of an electric motor is distributed among a plurality of individual motors which are accommodated with their stators in a common housing and carry gear wheels on their rotor shafts which gear wheels engage with a common central gear wheel, the characteristic data of the individual motors and the characteristic data of the object to be driven being stored in an electronic control device, while the temperature of the individual motors is continuously monitored and the individual motors being switched on, switched off or reversed individually as required for the respective drive task according to the requirement of the drive and as a function of the heating of the individual motors in such a manner that minimum current consumption, minimum heating and very close matching to the drive task are ensured.
