Apparatus for extracting heat and/or mechanical energy from a gas comprises a plurality of cylinders 20 mounted for rotation about an axis 2 and each provided with a free piston 22 that defines a fluid chamber 23. Valve means are provided at each end of the cylinder. Pressured gas is introduced into the end distant from the shaft 2 and will expand forcing the piston towards the end of the cylinder adjacent the shaft 2, and rotation of the assembly about the shaft 2 causes centrifugal force subsequently to force the piston outwardly. The cylinders may be curved or may be S-shaped or may take the form of a single helical cylinder. A compressor may be co- rotatable with the rotatable body. <IMAGE> |
