Process for the preparation of 2-phenyl-prop-2-ene-1-sulphonic acid and salts thereof

A novel process for the preparation of 2-phenyl-prop-2-ene-1-sulphonic acid, whereby 2-phenyl-1-propene is sulphonated using stoichiometric amounts of sulphur trioxide in the form of a 1:1 adduct of sulphur trioxide with N,N-dialkylated carboxamides in inert, water-immiscible haloalkanes at temperatures of between -20 and +50 DEG C.
