A sheet-shaped electrode plate (11) is guided with its front edge out of the inner retaining space (9) of a drum (1), through a gap in the drum sleeve and at the same time is surrounded in a U-shape by a separator strip (4) which is tensioned on the drum sleeve. Subsequently, the front edge of the electrode plate (11) is inserted into the gap of a winding needle (26). After a partial rotation of the winding needle (26) of approximately 270 DEG , a second electrode plate (32) is fed in such that it abuts with its front edge behind the bend edge of the electrode plate (11) provided with the separator (4). The winding needle (26) is subsequently caused to rotate again and the electrode set is wound together in the form of a spiral.
