PURPOSE:To enable automatic copy welding of a broad groove, by providing a torch member which brings the front end part of a welding torch into contact with one wall surface of the groove to copy the same and a means for energizing the front end of the torch to press the same to said one wall surface and controls the attitude of the torch. CONSTITUTION:A torch member A constituted of guide parts 32, 33 for copying the one side wall 37 of a beveled groove 30 in contact therewith by means of sliding members 39, 40 which are so shaped as to be made movable in the groove in its longitudinal direction and are insulated from each other as well as a leading out port 31 for a wire is inserted into the groove 30. The torch body is prepressed in the direction intersecting with the traveling direction to press and energize the torch member to the one side wall of the groove; at the same time, the leading out port of a wire is positioned with respect to the above-mentioned one wall surface by using a control means which detects the inclination of the torch and corrects the same; further the distance between the torch and the base materials is controlled by a suitable torch lifting means after the start of welding. The traveling of the torch while copying the one wall surface of the groove is thus made possible.
