There is an increasing demand for making surfaces, for example roof surfaces, vegetation-sustaining so as to utilise the ecological advantages mentioned, thus creating a better environment. The known objects which sustain vegetation are to be considered disadvantageous and of limited applicability only because of their costs, the necessity of artificial irrigation and because of the substantial weight of the layers used. The invention provides a substrate (mixture) as a nutrient medium for plants, which allows roofs to sustain vegetation on a large scale in a self-sustaining manner, while keeping the layer thickness down. Besides lava, sand and ground expanded clays, the substrate contains, as further substances, calcarious gravel and non-frostproof basalt. The plants used are lime-loving plants, xerophytes, mesophytes, which, together with the substrate, form an inseparable biological unit.
