摘要 PURPOSE:To reduce a loss of work in an internal-combustion engine wherein at least two or more intake (or exhaust) valves are provided for every unit of cylinder by having the plunger of a hydraulic lifter stay in a resting position for the purpose of bringing part of the valves to a rest in the closed condition. CONSTITUTION:The way how the mechanism described in the heading has a valve brought to a rest may be such that a high pressure in a high pressure chamber 42 beneath a plunger 41 which is disposed inside a casing 40 as longitudinally movable is released and a supporting reaction force of a hydraulic lifter 38 against a rocker arm 36 may be therefore dissipated to make the plunger 41 placed into the floating condition. Said releasing of the high pressure is performed by such a manner that turning a control shaft 51 causes an exhaust restricting valve 39 to be opened via a control member 52 and a push rod 50. A pressing member 55 is turnably mounted to the control shaft 51 and turned by a coiled spring (partially shown) 56 in the counterclockwise direction in association with the turning of the shaft 51 with said valve staying inactive, so as to press a rocker arm 36 and the plunger 41 downwards.
