PURPOSE:To apply uniform and constant pressure to a pole plate surface by inserting a spacer of discontinuous shape in the direction of pole plate surface of a lead storage battery being accommodated in the case and by supplying gas or liquid until its pressure reaches a certain constant level. CONSTITUTION:An unit pole plate group or plural groups of a lead storage battery consisting of positive pole plate, negative pole plate, separator and glass mat are accommodated within a case 6 made of iron etc., and a spacer 7 made of synthetic resin film of the continuous or discontinuous shape is inserted into the area corresponding to the pole plate surface. An uniform pressure is applied to the pole plate surface through the spacer 7 by supplying a gas or liquid to said spacer until its pressure reaches a certain level. Therefore, it is no larger necessary to strictly control the pressure applied to the pole plate surface at the time of assembling and the assembling work can be simplified. Moreover, exfoliation of active substance on the positive pole plate and decrease of capacitance due to thermal expansion and contraction of negative pole plate following charging and discharging process can be prevented. |
