PURPOSE:To obtain a display element having a stable shape with film axes of less deformation and having a bright display surface by making the bases for upper and lower polarization substrates equal to each other and parallel in the longitudinal direction of the element and forming the rubbing axes in substrate in parallel with the absorption axes of polarizers. CONSTITUTION:An element shown in (a) is formed with the stretching axes 15a of the films of an upper electrode polarization substrate 12 and a lower electrode substrate 13 in parallel with the longitudinal direction of the element. Therefore, a camber (deformation) is generated in the transverse direction but the max. (h) thereof is <=0.5mm. and the camber of the element is virtually inconspicuous. The element shown in (b), on the other hand, is formed with the film axes 15a of the substrate 12 and the substrate 13 in parallel with the transverse direction of the element and therefore a camber is generated in the longitudinal direction and the max. (h) thereof is >=1mm. and is undesirable. The element of the constitution shown in (a') is formed with rubbing axes 24 in parallel with the absorption axes 14a of polarizing elements 14 at the both substrate 12 and the substrate 13 and has less uneven colors on the surface. The element shown in (c) is formed with said axes conversely at right angles to the parallel of the above- described (a') and the uneven colors by an interference fringe are visible; therefore, said element is undesirable. |
