The invention relates to a labelling machine for containers, especially for bottles, having a straight first conveying section with a predetermined conveying speed for the containers at the inlet, having at least one labelling station provided at the first conveying section to apply the labels to the containers as they go past at a transfer region of the first conveying section, having a star which adjoins the first conveying section, rotates about a vertical axis and has pockets which are open at the side to receive one container in each case, and having a guide curve which partially encloses the star, star and guide curve forming a circular second conveying section. It is characterised in that a conveying worm is provided to the side of the first conveying section, the said conveying worm being rotatably driven about a horizontal axis and forming at least one worm-shaped bearing surface for the containers which extends into the first conveying section, in that the pitch of the worm-shaped bearing surface and therefore the conveying speed of the conveying worm increase towards the end of the conveying worm facing the star, and in that the rotating speed of the conveying worm and the pitch of the bearing surface are selected to ensure that the conveying speed of the first conveying section and the conveying speed of the conveying worm are approximately equal at the transfer region. <IMAGE>
