A device is used for detecting a periodically fluctuating quantity (S1), for example the exhaust gas temperature of an internal combustion engine, in which, in particular, the respective maximum values (S theta i), are to be determined. A reference quantity (S2), for example the ignition pulses (S1, S2...) are also included, which are logically combined with the fluctuating quantity (S1) and phase shifted with respect to the latter. The quantities (S1, S2) are compared with one another in a correlator (38), one of the quantities (S2) first being conducted via a phase shifter (35), which can be controlled from the output of the correlator (38), so that the phase difference becomes zero at the input of the correlator (38). At the instance of the occurrence of the maximum value of the reference signal (S3), the instantaneous value of the periodically fluctuating quantity (S1) is detected. <IMAGE>
