Steam generators which are self-supporting are increasingly demanded because of their advantages. In steam generators, which have a vertically extending, relatively high firing chamber and a horizontal contact flue adjoining in the upper part of the firing chamber, certain difficulties arise for a self-supporting type of construction, since different expansion conditions result for the two heating surface flues. According to the invention, it is proposed to design the contact heating surface as a self-supporting system with a support surface just below this contact heating surface and to arrange the lower part of the firing chamber suspended from this support surface. The invention is advantageous in those steam generators whose heating surfaces are to be cleaned by rapping or jarring, for example in steam generators with refuse firing or other steam generators which have to cope with dust-containing gases.
