PURPOSE:To decrease the insertion loss of a device and to improve reliability with a small and simple production system by forming biconical taper shapes of which the diameter decreases gradually and increases again gradually to an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:Three biconical taper parts 301, 302, 303 are formed to an optical fiber 300, thus constituting a mode scrambler 330. Now, when the light propagating in the fiber 300 is made incident to the tapered part 301, the light is in the direction where the core diameter decreases gradually and therefore the mode is converted to the higher mode but the mode conversion takes place again in the direction where the core diameter increases gradually and the more thorough mode coupling arises in the tapered parts 302, 303, resulting in the improved performance of the mode scrambler. Since the tapered parts are formed by pulling the optical fiber in the longitudinal direction thereof in the heated state, the mode scrambler 330 of a low loss is obtd. by the simple production method. |
