To control the transition from one communication type, in particular a PCM speech signal transmission, to a different communication type, in particular a data signal transmission during the transmission of digital signals between signal transmitting and signal receiving devices (Tra, Rec) which are designed to transmit or receive digital signals according to at least two different communication types and in which the transition concerned is effected by means of a separate preamble signal which is transmitted from the signal transmitting device (Tra) to the signal receiving device (Rec), it is provided for a signal corresponding to the last digital signal transmitted in the one communication type with a defined frequency of occurrence to be transmitted from the signal transmitting device (Tra) to the signal receiving device (Rec) as a preamble signal. <IMAGE>
