THE USE OF EUCARYOTIC PROMOTER SEQUENCES IN THE PRODUCTION OF PROTEINACEOUS MATERIALS

Use of inducible promoter sequences in the production of elevated amounts of proteinaceous materials by transformed eucaryotic cells. Eucaryotic cells which have been cotransformed with DNA which includes a gene coding for a desired proteinaceous material such as insulin, human or bovine growth hormone, or an antibody and an inducible promoter sequence and with DNA coding for a selectable phenotype will, in the presence of an inducing agent for the promoter, produce elevated quantities of the desired protein. This approach can be used in combination with gene amplification techniques to produce particularly high amounts of desired proteins. This invention also provides methods for the therapeutic treatment of genetically defective eucaryotic cells and of persons suffering from genetically-based diseases or illnesses such as sickle cell anemia.
