<p>In the activated sludge treatment of aqueous effluent, the effluent is aerated first by one or more mechanical aerators introducing air into the surface of the effluent, and then by one or more submerged diffusers. In this way, biofouling of the submerged diffusers (eg. fine bubble diffusers) is avoided, and also a higher efficiency in terms of mass of oxygen absorbed per unit of energy input is achieved than with either a mechanical aerator system alone or a submerged diffuser system alone. Preferably 20% to 50% of the total oxygen demand is satisfied by the mechanical aerators. <IMAGE></p> |
