A syringe for collecting a blood sample or another liquid has an injection cylinder 101 and a plunger 106 fitted displaceably within this. In the inner wall of the injection cylinder there is configured one or more axially running recesses 102, lying at an axial distance from the innermost end of the cylinder. The recess or recesses 102 contain(s) a material which is permeable to gas but impermeable to liquid, such as a hydrophobic material, a hydrophilic material with capillary effect, or a material which swells upon contact with liquid. The sample-collecting chamber 108 within the cylinder 101 can be brought into contact with the atmosphere by placement of the plunger in that region of the cylinder which is provided with recesses 102. Arterial blood can then be introduced into the syringe under arterial blood pressure and the blood flow into the syringe is automatically halted once the sample-collecting chamber is full, since the blood is unable to pass through the liquid- impermeable material placed in the recesses. The axially innermost part of the inner cylinder wall, which is not provided with recesses, can interact conventionally with the plunger and can thus, if desired, produce a suction effect in the blood-collecting chamber. <IMAGE>
