PURPOSE:To control a welding torch so as to copy exactly a welding line, by detecting the extents of the movement of a stylus respectively in the two directions differing from the moving direction of a stylus moved along the welding line by means of strain gages connected to the probe and using the detected values thereof as copying data. CONSTITUTION:An annular probe 1 operating cooperatively with a welding torch 16 which can be three-dimensionally moved is moved along the welding groove L, that is, welding line, of steel pipes W, W'. The extents of the movement of the probe with respect to the two directions differing from said moving direction, that is, the direction intersecting orthogonally with the weld line and the thickness direction are detected respectively with the two strain gages 7a, 7b and 9a, 9b connected to the probe 1. The probe 1 is then moved in the above- described two different directions so as to eliminate the deviations between the detected values and the preset reference values and the torch 16 is moved in accordance with said extents of movement a copying data, whereby the groove L is welded. As a result, the deviation between the groove 6 and the weld beads is averted and the projection length of a wire and welding current are maintained constant, whereby welding conditions are stabilized. |
