PURPOSE:An optical fibers for transmitting infrared rays, obtained by drawing a glass consisting of Se, As and Ge in a specific composition, having transmittance within a wide infrared wavelength region and a transmitting window of light with a low loss particularly within a given wavelength region. CONSTITUTION:Se, As and Ge of high purity are weighed in such a ratio as to give a glass having a composition of 55-94at% Se, 0-40at% As and 2-18at% Ge to make the total 100at%, hot molten and vitrified. The resultant base material for the glassis then drawn to give the aimed optical fibers for transmitting infrared rays. 0.5-8at% P, Sb or Te is if necessary added to the above-mentioned glass as a base material to impart a relative difference between the core and clad. The resultant optical fibers have the transmittance characteristics within 1-16mum wide infrared wavelength region and a transmitting window particularly within 5-10mum wavelength region of light with a small loss. |
