The arrangement is intended for an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor for waste water purification in which this water is introduced from below and passes upwards through the sludge bed to a separator section where water, sludge and gas are separated. Means are provided at a level below that section which prevent sludge from coalescing to pieces of a coherent layer trapping gas and being carried up thereby ensuring that the sludge remains or becomes hydrolysed, particularly during periods of little or no load. These means consist of a vibrator (7) assembly (6,11) inside the reactor vessel (1), or a vibrating reactor bottom, an agitator, or metal or plastic wire mesh with e.g. 1.5 cm. meshes arranged below the separator to break up coalescing sludge. Anaerobic purificn. of waste water, partic. from the food industry or domestic waste water, or generally where the sludge tends to cohere flake-fashion, at least initially, rather than being more granular (as in the sugar industry).
|
