Very finely divided iron ores are prepared for sintering by mixing the powdered iron ore with 1.5-5 wt.% rich clay which is rich in swellable clay minerals so that on absorption of water an enlargement of the cell parameters occurs; adjusting the moisture content of the mixt. to 5-15%; pressing the mass, e.g. by extrusion; and opt. comminuting the material to aggregates of the desired size and shape and having the necessary rigidity and cohesion. - Process gives coarse iron ore particles which can be sintered and are then suitable as a filling for blast furnaces which do not clog the passage of the combustion gas, as happens with finely divided iron ore particles.
