PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound, by reacting a phenol having hydrogen at ortho position with a fatty or aromatic alcohol using a catalyst obtained by combining iron oxide with the secondary component such as gallium oxide and the third component such as magnesium oxide, etc. CONSTITUTION:A phenol having hydrogen at least one ortho position is reacted with an alcohol shown by the formula (R<1> is H, or alkyl; R<2> is aryl, or R<1> and R<2> are linked to form cycloalkyl) under heating using a catalyst comprising (A) iron oxide, (B) the second component consisting of at least one metal oxide selected from gallium oxide, germanium oxide, yttrium oxide, niobium oxide, hafnium oxide, tantalum oxide, etc. and (C) the third component consisting of at least one metal compound selected from magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, aluminum oxide, silicon oxide, etc., so that an alkyl group or aryl group corresponding to each of the alcohol is introduced to the ortho position of the phenol, to give the desired compound. |
