The invention relates to a controllable shock absorber, in particular for motor vehicles, consisting of a cylinder filled with a damping fluid and a cylindrical pot which fits over the cylinder and, on the inside, carries a central and axial piston rod which plunges into the cylinder and, at its end, bears a disc which is sealed off relative to the cylinder wall, divides the cylinder space into two chamber halves and has direction-dependent high- and low-pressure valves. Arranged under spring loading and in a manner which allows it to move axially within an axial bore of the piston rod is a control slide which, in the rest position or the working position, closes or opens an additional through opening (bypass) between the two chamber halves. The spring for moving the control slide is a bimetallic spring, the axial length of which changes, for the axial temperature-dependent displacement of the control slide in the flow path of the bypass.
