PURPOSE:To obtain a uniform electrochromic color developing layer consisting of several electroconductive polymer film by heat-treating ITO glass under a condition contg. almost no oxygen such as under high vacuum, then carrying out electrolytic oxidative polymerization of aniline, etc. CONSTITUTION:ITO is formed on a glass substrate, and the obtd. ITO glass substrate is heat-treated under <=10<-3>Torr at 350-450 deg.C for >=2hr. An electrochromic color developing layer comprising polymer film is formed on the heat-treated glass substrate by carrying out electrolytic oxidative polymerization using the heat-treated ITO glass substrate as deposition electrode. By this method, an electrochromic display device permitting uniform display is obtd. Further, a display electrode of an electrochromic display device having large display area can also be obtd.
