A pitch suitable for spinning directly into carbon fibers, characterised by containing (i) from 80 to 100 percent by weight toluene insolubles, (ii) at least 15 percent by weight quinoline insolubles and/or from 1 to 60 percent by weight pyridine insolubles and (iii) is preferably substantially free of impurities and ash; said pitch having been derived from a substantially deasphaltenated fraction of a coat distillate.
