PURPOSE:To provide a thermal head enabled in the reduction of printing electric power and the adhesion amount of printing work-up, obtained by preliminarily forming the part of a heat storing glass layer functioning as a heat generating part into a protruded shape to flatten the surface of the heat generating part of an overcoat layer. CONSTITUTION:The heat storing glass layer 12 of a glazed alumina substrate formed by coating the surface of a heat discharge substrate 11 with the heat storing glass layer 12 is etched by a thickness corresponding to that of a conductive layer 14 so as to leave a part corresponding to a heat generating area 16 to form a protruded part 12a on the heat storing glass layer 12. In the next step, a resistance thin film comprising tantalum nitride is formed to the surface of the etched heat storing glass layer 12 to obtain a resistance layer 13 which is, in turn, etched into a predetermined shape to form a conductive thin layer on the surface thereof as a conductive layer 14. Succeedingly, the conductive layer 14 is etched to flatten the surface of the heat generating part 16 so as to expose the heat generating part 16 of the resistance layer 13 and, thereafter, an overcoat layer 15 is formed from a silicon oxide film to obtain an objective thermal head. |
