The invention relates to bis(pentabromobenzyl) terephthalate which is obtained by reacting pentabromobenzyl bromide with terephthalic acid, which is dissolved in an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution, in a polar solvent such as, for example, glycol ether. This compound is used for fireproofing thermoplastic materials.
