The heat pump here uses as the heat source the sensible and latent heat of a liquid during ice formation, and uses the melt liquid for cooling when cooling is required. The evaporator (7) of the heat pump is situated in a liquid-filled container (9). The ice is released by reversal of the refrigerant flow and is floated into a further container (2) by raising the liquid level. The second container is preferably underground. When cooling is required, the melt liquid is conveyed to exchanges for cooling. If the enclosure of the ground container is allowed to project into the building and is insulated, a cooling space for foodstuffs is obtained. The container with the evaporator is appropriately set up in the cooling space. Two three-way valves (16,17) are sufficient to conduct the cold melt liquid into the heating distribution system in order to cool the building. <IMAGE>
